             The world's most valuable and fastest breed of horse, the Thoroughbred, has led to a multi-billion dollar horse racing industry that has a history of success and failure. Thoroughbreds originated in England at the end of the 17th century. The English developed the Thoroughbred from a breeding of a captured Middle Eastern stallion and an English mare. The English had bred their horses to be strong and heavy, capable of doing heavy work. The Middle East bred their lighter horses for speed and stamina. The Thoroughbred was a result of this cross breeding, a very fast and strong horse The pioneers of the sport of horse racing used a combination of these physical trait and a selective breeding process to build the horse racing empire (Edwards).
             The British brought horses and horse racing with them when they came over to the New World, building the first racetrack on Long Island as early as 1665. The sport was a popular pastime, and the actual development of organized racing did not occur until after the Civil War. It was during the aftermath of the Civil War and the next several decades of a rapidly rising industrial economy that gambling on racehorses and horse racing itself grew explosively.
             The first major thoroughbred-racing venue in the United States was at Saratoga Springs, New York in 1863. Churchill Downs, in Louisville, Kentucky opened its flat-racing track in 1875. Other thoroughbred tracks soon appeared across the country. The rapid growth of horse racing demanded tracks and by 1890, 314 tracks were operating across the country (Ainslie ).
