The two stories, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte and Wide Sargasso Sea, by Jane Rhys, both tell the story of a wealthy man named Rochester. The stories though revolve around the person which Rochester would eventually marry and not Rochester himself, this makes the stories unique. Wide Sargasso Sea focuses mainly around Rochester's early marriage to Bertha Mason, while Jane Eyre takes place in the time period after the marriage. How does Antoinette seem through the eyes of both authors? The two views make Bertha out differently. In Wide Sargasso Sea, it looks as if Bertha just had a very rough upbringing, while in Jane Eyre she looked like an absolute lunatic.
             In Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte, Jane Eyre, the second wife of Rochester and help at the time, seems to think there is something strange going on in Thornfield. Throughout the novel, she hears odd noises coming from the attic. Rochester claims it is just an eccentric servant named Grace Poole. One major incident in Jane Eyre is the fire where Jane ends up saving Rochester's life. She had heard someone scratching on her door and making noise so she went out in the hall to see who it was. When she came out there was smoke coming from Rochester's room, and probably would have been killed if not for Jane. Once again, Rochester puts the blame on Grace Poole. Surprisingly, the next morning Grace isn't punished at all and just goes on as normal. Rochester then tells Jane to bolt her door every night.
             In Wide Sargasso Sea, Bertha explains what really happens to show how this is contradicting discourse. She was very confused about the incident and thinks it was all a dream. Bertha waited for grace to go to sleep and then drank Grace's alcohol. Bertha then finds a pair of keys and leaves the attic to explore. It is very dark in the house so she lights a candle to see.
