Sandra Cisneros short story "Woman Hollering Creek" told of a young Hispanic woman by the name of Cleofilas whose struggles' included abuse, loneliness and confusion. Marrying young, and to a man that was both verbally and physically abusive, Cleofilas had to set her dreams of passion and happiness aside to carry out the role of housewife and mother. Longing to return home to her father and brothers, Cleofilas decided to leave her unhappy life in Texas and follow her dream of independence. Although Cleofilas lived her life in an abusive and controlling situation where she felt trapped and confined, she found strength, hope and freedom in her dreams, her father and a woman named Felice.
             Cleofilas married Juan Pedro when the couple was still fairly young. Moving to Sequin Texas and leaving her father and six brothers behind, Cleofilas envisioned her life with Juan Pedro as a happy one, with a husband who loved his wife and children and they would live happily ever after, like in the telenovelas. Reality quickly set in when Juan Pedro became abusive almost immediately after their move to Texas, leaving Cleofilas bruised and bloody. Shocked and confused about the way her husband had treated her, Cleofilas did not run or defend herself as she imagined she would in that type of situation. Instead she "just stroked the dark curls of the man who wept...of repentance and shame, this time and each (he hit her)," (401). With one young son and a baby on the way, Cleofilas felt she had little choice but to stay with the man that made her so unhappy.
             Despite the fact that Cleofilas appeared unhappy, naive and timid, there was a fire inside of her that yearned for passion, happiness and contentment. Dreaming of a peaceful existence, beautiful hair and makeup, and a tall, dark and handsome man in her life were things that Cleofilas had longed for ever since she lived with her father and brother
