Macbeth LIP

             The Father of modern political science, Machiavelli said, "The ends justify the means." Taking this into consideration we will look at the tragedy of Macbeth, a play written by the famous author William Shakespeare.
             Throughout the play there are many events in which we see that the character Macbeth is leading a life along the Machiavellian political path. Macbeth truly believes that the ends do justify the means.
             Macbeth did indeed stick to the Machiavellian point of view; he was deceiving to many of his loyal friends, and the people of Scotland. Machiavelli said in his advice to those in search of power: "When possible, be good (and always "appear" to be good – merciful, faithful, humane, sincere and religious) when something evil is required, cover it with good reason." We see that Macbeth is deceiving when he kills King Duncan in his sleeping chambers (II. ii. 14) and then after told the people, who were in absolute shock of their king's death, that their king was slain by the chamber maids (II. ii. 56-60). With King Duncan dead, Macbeth was able to make a step forward in gaining what he figured to be rightfully his: the throne of Scotland.
             This was not the first time that Macbeth took whatever he wanted to get whatever he wanted. Macbeth had been gaining power since the beginning of the play. This is seen when King Duncan is being briefed about the battle in Fife; the Captain told him that Macbeth was "Brave... a good fighter...worthy gentlemen" (I. ii. 16-24). Macbeth had been fighting the rebels – who were revolting against King Duncan – gaining respect and honor among the high lords, and even from the King himself. He killed the leader of the rebellion (I. ii. 18-25) and was awarded Thane of Cawdor for his hard fighting and strong endurance in the battle against Norway.
