Culturally Proficient Educator

Becoming an educator is something that most people in our society today greatly underestimate. But if we were to take a close look at any classroom across the nation we would see that classrooms are simply small versions of our own societies. They have the same diverseness as our population in terms of race, sex, religion, and in some ways even intellectual level. That is why having a teacher at the head of the class who is culturally proficient is very important.
To become a culturally proficient educator, teachers need to use a variety of skills and strategies in order to smooth the progress of student learning. One strategy calls for a teacher to value the diversity in their particular classroom. This means that a teacher must understand the importance of recognizing children's backgrounds and acknowledge these differences in healthy ways. Another way to become a more culturally proficient educator is for a teacher to manage the dynamics of the differences that exist. This strategy calls for interactions with students from different cultures through a the classroom environment. An added skill a teacher needs to become more culturally proficient is to incorporate cultural knowledge through their lessons. This skill requires the teacher to be able to know how to teach all groups in a way that recognizes each group equally.
The number one goal for any teacher should be to create an learning rich environment where every student feels comfortable and motivated to learn. And this makes the goal of becoming a culturally proficient educator that much more important. Teachers are the one of the figures in children's lives that are often remembered well into adulthood. So for this very reason, it is very important that teachers understand and appreciate the differences that exist throughout or society and in our classrooms.
