Oleanna

The author of Oleanna, David Mamet has created for us a scenario in which we are warned of the danger in a woman's right to prosecute a man for sexual harassment. It appears as though Mamet intends to challenge the reader to understand the complexity that a sexual harassment situation can possess and confirm that in result an innocent man could be wrongly accused. Mamet has presented two main characters John, a professor, and Carol, a student who has come to him for help. Carol in the end accuses John of sexual harassment because she misconstrues his honorable intentions for sexual advancements. Mamet portrays Carol as a malicious woman who because of her shortcomings intellectually and economically is bitter and seeking revenge to compensate for her lack of power. Personally I applaud Carol for exercising the right and responsibility she has to castigate a man who is contributing to the preservation of an archaic domination that our patriarchal society has over women.
I feel that what happens to John is tragic and am sorry for how his wife and son will be directly effected. I am also aware that the allegations of which he is so severely charged with, ninety percent of all american men are guilty of.
A joke you have told, with a sexist tinge. The language you use, a verbal or physical caress.
A woman should not have to ignore verbal or physical oppression which makes her feel degraded just because it is a typical occurance. This is the exact attitude that will allow things to always stay the same. If men are not held accountable for their oppressive actions and attitudes, women will never achieve the equality they deserve. Carol points out that it takes severe punishment and action to force people to change their wrong doings.

"Well, lets say as an act of friendship..."
