nese attacked Pearl Harbor, the planning of the Japanese-American relocation camps had already started. In the early 1940's the United States Supreme Court wished to drive out the Japanese-Americans from their homes due to the hostility the Japanese military was showing to the U.S. (Fremon 13) Around the time the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor many Japanese-Americans were beginning to fear public reaction against them. Soon after the attack, as the Japanese-Americans had feared, many anti-Japanese campaigns and a barrage of racist attacks stepped up and the plans for relocation camps progressed. (Fremon 13)
             The U.S. Constitution promises the rights of liberty and justice for all, but for the Japanese-Americans, the promise was broken. (Fremon 17) (Omata 245) On March 18, 1942, Executive Order 9012 was signed and army troops started to transport the evacuees to the relocation camps. As the Issei and Nisei ( first and second generation Japanese-Americans) were moved out of their homes, most families had very little time to prepare. Therefore, many lost their possessions and land. (The Japanese American Curriculum Project 5) "Evacuation instructions stated that each person could only take what he or she could carry." (The Japanese American Curriculum Project 8)(Omata 247)
             The relocation and assembly centers were located in nine states but the evacuees were first taken to assembly centers since the relocation camps were not ready yet. (Fremon 55) As the Japanese-Americans arrived at the assembly centers they saw barbed wire fences and soldiers with guns guarding them. (The Japanese American Curriculum Project 9) Regardless of family size, the evacuees were given only one room. There was little privacy and no furniture except beds.
