Spike lee

             There are many successful film producers who create many movies that have absolutely no meaning other than to entertain. Spike Lee, on the other hand, differentiates himself with an array of movies that contain meaning. On Monday, February 16, 2004, I was lucky enough to see this brilliant artist speak his mind. The topics that Lee covered were quite thought provoking. I am not a great writer, so the wording in this paper will be as simple as my mind.
             The anticipation was built before Spike Lee came on stage with a lady who talked about him for a while. She revealed that Spike Lee's real name is Shelton Jackson Lee, which sort of made people laugh probably because Spike sounds like such a tough name, quite opposite of Lee's real name. Anyway, Lee finally emerged on stage to a standing ovation. Lee emanates a powerful message with the way he talks. He addressed us all with a very friendly and enthusiastic tone of voice. The message he presented was one of success and trend setting.
             Spike Lee shared with us the story of how he came to enter the film industry. Contrary to what I previously believed, Lee was not from an extremely rich family. His struggle for education in the field of his choice and attaining success set a landmark for black films; basically fathering the industry. Spike Lee is a piece of walking history and produces historically significant movies. Though movies such as "Bamboozled" are seemingly for comedic purposes only. I mean, black people painting their faces even darker parading about on stage as the whites once did; that is quite comical material. There are serious undertones however, the one presented here being that black people should not poke fun at their own race.
             Lee addressed the issue of what defines black and what defines white in the eyes of the current majority of black youth. He said that black people think that being smart and not doing drugs
