Ironically, the Soviets began helping Cuba in 1959, when the U.S. was still deciding if Cuba was a friend or foe. There had been two times that Cuba thought that an American invasion was iminent, but the U.S. actually had no plans to do so. When Cuba thought the U.S. was going to invade, the Soviet Union prepared to deploy its nuclear weapons, and when an American attack did not come, Cuba thought it was because of the Soviet Union. Krushchev and the Soviet Union began to think that more of his sucess came because Castro was in power. He felt that if Cuba was lost, it would have been greatly diminished the Soviet staure throughout the world. Cuban defense could not have been the real reason for sending ballistic missles to Cuba for a few reasons.
