When flipping through the pages of a Popular Photography magazine, there's a very good chance that one will come across a camera advertisement. Canon Inc. in particular produces effective ads, one of which will be addressed in further detail.
At the first glance, the Canon Inc. ad is very appealing. Taking up one whole page, the ad overwhelms the reader at first glance. The bottom half of the ad is filled with a photograph of a train crossing a tall, steel-supported bridge that seems to carry the train over a luscious, almost dreamy background dominated with green trees and grassland, interspersed with red and yellow trees. It is important to note that the photo seems to have been taken from a very high angle, as if the man behind the camera was flying above the train. Not only is the photo fully in focus, but the colors are also very vibrant – this is definitely the work of a professional. The top part of the image includes text, Canon's red EOS logo and a beautiful picture of Canon's Elan7E camera, flanked by one of the brand's many lenses.
After the first glance, one tends to want to examine the photo in more depth. The first noticeable thing is the fact that the train and bridge are black. This color is more than black, it's a dark shade that gives the typical reflection of cold, hard steel. This is in stark contrast to the bright green background of vegetation. On top of this the dark gray smoke that billows from the train engine seems to invade the beautiful green scenery as well. These color contrasts coupled with the high angle at which this photograph was taken gives the feeling that this towering gigantic cold steel juggernaut is overpowering the soft, innocent natural landscape under it.
