There were many governments in Greece, all the city-states were separate, each city –state had a different government. The story, Antigone, the setting takes place in Thebes, Emperor Creon at that time, and is the ruler of the city. This type of government that Thebes has, in this particular story, is different from the system of government that Athens has in Cleisthenes time.
There were a lot of similarities between the Athenian rulers and Creon. In 527 BC, when Hippias, the son of Pisistratus, was heir to his father's throne. When his brother was assassinated, he turned to an absolute tyrant, just like Creon. Hated by most citizens, he then was exiled and stripped of his throne. Like Creon, Hippias was also an evil tyrant.
The story of Antigone and the history and rulings of Athens had positives and negatives. The negatives of Creon were his difficult rulings and his complete tyranny. The positives were that he seems to have learned his lesson at the end of the story, after because of suicides of his family. This proves that Creon is speaking from his heart; he really wants to die with his wife and his son. On the other hand, the negatives of the events in Athens were when Hippias became the ruler because he was a brutal tyrant. Another downbeat was when Isagoras betrayed his own city by attacking Athens with Sparta. Rebellion led him to be impeached from the throne, and that is when the positives come along. After the betrayal of Isagoras, the throne was finally given back to Cleisthenes. This was a good thing because Cleisthenes created a system of government, making Athens more democratic. It made sure that the officials can do their jobs. Also this would mean that there would be no corrupted officials. This made Athens more organized and peaceful.
In conclusion, the story Antigone and the history of Athens are different and similar in a way. Also, both had positives and negatives happenings. Creon rulings ...
