To laugh or not to Laugh

             Horace Walpole once said "Life is tragedy to those who feel and a comedy to those who think". Henri Bergson seemed believe the same declaration. In his book "Laughter –an Essay on the Meaning of Comic" Bergson asserts, "Le comique n'existe pas hors du pâle de quel est strictement humain". (The comic does not exist outside the pale of what is strictly human (1)". Bergson states that everything that is funny is funny because of the human element. For example a person laughs at a hat not because the hat itself is funny but because of the shape man has given the hat. In Henri Bergson's viewpoint laughter requires an absence of emotion. Bergson claims that tension and elasticity are needed in mind and body. He states that society is always conscious of elasticity in mind and body and when society sees a person lacking in either respect that person must be dealt with. As book reviewer Robert Burns Neveldine put it, "We chuckle at Lucy attempting to wrap the bonbons speeding by on a candy-factory conveyor belt because she's stuck in one place, performing the same task over and over, and failing; we hope that in similar situations we could be more flexible. Bergson recaps: "Rigidity is the comic, and laughter is its corrective." "Laughter, Bergson says, is the way to deal. To Bergson, only laughter "corrects men's manner". By society acknowledging the "problem" it is essentially helping the person cope or fix the issue. Bergson states "One has to detach himself from emotion in order to laugh. Bergson felt that anything not tragedy was comic.
