Myth. Just as in the story the sword and the stone. When small Arthur pulls a sword out of the stone it is believed that he is now King. Feudalism not only refers to the Kings and peasants but also to the Catholic Church. In essence the Pope is like the king to them. The only difference is that the only way a man can become a Pope is through God. Three challenges had come up against feudalism which it easier for the Classical Liberals to put together arguments against it. These first of these three challenges was Internal Protestant reformation which put up charges against the Catholics saying that they were corrupt internally and in the church itself. To stop corruption they came up with the idea the priesthood of all believers, which took away from the catholic churches legitimacy. Second challenge was the rise of modern science that throws faith out the window and says that there is no difference between the king and the peasant and that we are all biologically the same. The third challenge was capitalism which brought the idea of commonwealth and usury, which is making money by lending money. These three challenges in my opinion made it easier for the classic liberals to argue against a feudalistic society.
