Women's lives were hard at the beginning of the century, however as world war one came so did changing social values.
             In world war one many Australian nurses served in Gallipoli, Egypt, Burma, Mesopotmia and Russia. Their main work was at the Western Front or close to the front line. Many wanted to serve at the front and in 1916 Australian Women's Service Corps pushed this cause but the government continued to refuse women to participate in active service. Some travelled to Britain to serve at the front joining the British women's service corps. The First World War created a more active role for women; however, they were still refined to more feminie roles within this.
