Every night, when family members go to sleep, a disturbing noise in the neighborhood changes the relaxing night into a circus atmosphere. Crying, howling, barking, just making any possible noise to get attention or let everyone know, "we are here and we don't like that!" What did we do wrong? How did we get here? Why doesn't anybody want us any more? These disturbing thoughts race through the minds of all too many unwanted dogs.
Majority of dogs find their way into their first home from friends of the owner, from breeders or from newspaper ads (APPMA). Most of those dogs probably begin life as puppies in a happy family. They get great attention from others, also all the sweet love they could ever imagine. They spend their early days running in the back yard, chasing balls, chewing special treats, having plenty of exercise, eating leftovers from lunch, waging their fluffy tail with a big happy smile on their faces, and showing appreciation for any moment we spend by their side. They are pack animals, and playing or having social contact is very important for them. Many people like to use puppies as presents for their loved ones for special occasions. For example Easter, Christmas and Birthdays are usually moments when a beautiful sweet little puppy seems like a good present. However even cute puppies grow up and need to be cared for 24 hours per day. Puppies grow older and become adult dogs, and their needs change. If the owners do not understand their pets evolving needs, it can be hard on the dog, and hard on the owner when the dog doesn't behave as expected. Dog's lonely noses press against the cruel fence bars of their properties. Never ending tearful barking echoes throughout the whole neighborhood like the alarm of an ambulance rushing through.
