             With moral education not being emphasized to today's youth, there has been a great increase of youth violence and self destruction. Among teens living in the United States, homicide rates have more than doubled since the 1980s (Damon, 1995). Homicidal violence is only one of the fatal dangers that children are turning to with greater frequency. Many young people who are not busy destroying others are doing it to themselves. In a 1993 survey it was found that "20 percent of high school male students made a plan to commit suicide and that half of these students had made an actual attempt" (Damon, 1995, p. 19). Suicide is one of the leading causes of deaths among the young. Drugs, alcohol, and teen pregnancy are also problems today's youth are faced with in this society.
             These, although most obvious, are not the only problems with children today. The majority of teachers everywhere "complain of a host of behavioral problems among the students they encounter today" (Damon, 1995, p. 20). Teen gambling is reaching an all time high and with it "a cluster of deviant social and personal behavior, including petty theft, heavy borrowing, habitual deceitfulness, and irregular sleeping hours" (Damon, 1995, p. 20).
