Capitalism Kills

Howard Fast's The Large Ant is a socially valuable story because it shows how the capitalist ideology, "every man for himself and his own," is in human nature. This capitalist principle leads to class division and ultimately allows humanity to fear different things, thus killing what is different.
The first instance of this ideology is when Morgan is relaxing on his bed when he looks up and sees the giant Ant. Because the Ant is different from him and much different from any other species of its kind that he is aware of, he kills it. "I...struck it a savage and accurate blow and killed it," He writes. "I think that any man, black, white, or yellow in China, Africa, Russia, would have done the same thing." With this notion, it is readily understood that the capitalist thought of individual protection complements the idea of humanity as a whole.
When Morgan takes the dead Ant to the museum, the three men awaiting him examine why he killed the giant Ant. "Did it seem about to attack you?" Lieberman asks. Morgan's reply is an emphatic "No." Fritzgerald, however, explains that Morgan killed the Ant because he is human. With this evidence, it becomes apparent that it is only human as per the capitalist belief to destroy what is different even if that oddity does not pose any immediate threat.
Then Morgan suggests publicizing these ants to prevent future executions of the species. Still, Fritzgerald expresses his worries saying, "What then – panic, hysteria, charges that this is the result of the atom bomb? We can't change. We are what we are." Fitzgerald reveals that publicizing the ants would only strike fear in a capitalist society where protection of himself and his own is critical. By showing such a peculiarity to the people, they would immediately reject it– because that's how the capitalist society operates and is why upper and lower classes are set apart: because they are different.
Morgan later admits, "We don't look...
