Although initiating the responder with a description of the injuries and deaths sustained on the war front, the sestet delves deeper, beyond that of the actual war front into a reflection. Through the use of rhetoric, "What candles may be held to speed them up?" the persona questions whether or not the mourning families will get to say good-bye to those loved ones they had lost. This rhetorical question allows the responder to pause and ponder 'what could bring the loved ones home?' The mourning present is further emphasised through emotive language such as "pall, flowers, dusk" and "drawing down of the blinds" which all portray a scene of death and evoke feeling in the responder. The technique of rhyme, e.g. "minds, blinds", is integrated by Owen to entice the responder's concentration to the consideration of those left behind and to establish movement within the poem.
             As the aforementioned poems showed, the elegy titled Futility provides the responder with a lot more than a graphic description of war. The poem suggests the sun is a source of healing and hope through imagery "Move him into the sun" "always it woke him" and personification "The kind old sun". This allows the responder to picture the soldier obtaining power and life from the sun. The pleading persona questions the point of war and life through the use of rhetorical questions, for instance, "Was it for this the clay grew tall? And "O what made fatuous sunbeams... break earth's sleep at all?" Such bitter rhetorical questions allow the responder to contemplate on the issues of life and war.
