             In addition, the marriage of Addie and Anse seemed rocky from the onset. Addie made it clear to the reader that she was not happy in the marriage and despised her husband. In turn, Anse had similar feelings for Addie, and the couple's distaste toward each other seemed to fuel the fire even further causing them both to be bitter and snide to each other, the rest of their family and people in general. Anse's lack of caring is very noticeable throughout the novel and is extremely prevalent after Addie's death when he exclaims " 'God's will be done,' he says. 'Now I can get them teeth.'"
