The topic is discussed in particular to the activities if the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank and the other regional development banks with specific reference to the IMF in the aftermath of economic crises. It is intended to show the origins of the 1997 East Asian economic crisis, the response of the IMF to the crisis and the criticisms of the IMF's response to this particular crisis.
             As such, the weaknesses in the international financial institutions would be examined, as exposed by the East Asian financial crisis, and that they are in dire need of restructuring. The structural deficiencies of the global financial system and the various recommendations and suggestions for restructuring would be presented and examined.
