Nick takes a trip to the city with Gatsby, Gatsby tells Nick about his past, and however the story seems quite improbable. As Gatsby's car speeds through the valley of the ashes, a policeman pulls him over and Gatsby's shows a white card and the policeman excuses him. After the lunch with Gatsby, Nick meets up with Jordan Baker who tells him what she learned the other night. Gatsby is in love with Daisy Buchanan. According to Jordan they met before the war and were deeply in love and now Gatsby wants to see her again.
             Jordan Baker. "He wants to know if you'll invite Daisy to your house some afternoon." Jordan is beautiful, but also dishonest: she cheated in order to win her first golf tournament and continually bends the truth.
             Jordan is Daisy's friend, a woman with whom Nick becomes romantically involved during the course of the novel. A competitive golfer, Jordan represents one of the "new women" of the 1920s cynical, boyish, and self-centered.
             "Unlike Gatsby and Tom Buchanan I had no girl whose disembodied face floated along the dark cornices and blinding signs so I drew up the girl beside me tightening my arms." This quote shows that love is a dominant theme is this novel.
             The symbols in this chapter are the ash heap and Gatsby's car.
             As Nick walks home from a date with Jordan, Gatsby approaches Nick from across the lawn. Gatsby is nervous that Nick won't accept the plan with Daisy, however he does and Gatsby is happy. It rains on the day of the meeting so Gatsby is quite nervous. When they first meet, it was awkward, Gatsby knocks over a clock, however, Nick leaves them alone and when he comes back they are both happy. In the end Nick wonders if Daisy can live up to her expectations that Gatsby has set for her.
