Mel Brooks Biography

             Mel Brooks was born in Jewish family in Brooklyn on June 28, 1926 with the name of Melvyn Kaminsky. As a kid he would hang out spending his time at the local movie theater watching all of the great silent actors at the time like Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin.
             When Mel Brooks was older he joined the army and went to North Africa during World War II. After the war he moved to Catskill, New York and worked as a standup comedian in resorts. He then changed his name to Mel Brooks from Melvyn Kaminsky because a famous composer Max Kaminsky had the same last name. Mel Brooks later wrote jokes with Woody Allen, Neil Simon and Carl Reiner for Sid Caesar's Your Show of Shows. Mel Brooks and Sid Caesar would get into fist fights for who wrote what joke. After Mel Brooks received an Emmy for his writings he left Your Show of Shows. Mel Brooks then helped create the TV show Get Smart which lasted to 1969. This gave him respect from Joseph E. Levin who paid for Mel Brooks first feature film, The Producers in 1970. The film The Producers gave Mel Brooks an Oscar for his Best Screenplay and started his creation of films.
             Mel Brooks next film was Blazing Saddles which he co-wrote and directed in 1974. It was his first parody film which was a western genre. He's cast was assembled with Gene Wilder, Harvey Korman and Madeline Kahn. Mel Brooks then followed his success with the film Young Frankenstein which he co-written with Gene Wilder and directed it. It was a success.
             In the next 20 year Mel Brooks came out with many films, all were parodies. They included Silent Movie (1977) and High Anxiety (1977). Then his later, not as successful films, History of The World- Part I (1981), Space Balls (1987), Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993), and Dracula: Dead and Loving it (1995).
