ng in serious capacity problems at many airports. Studies performed by airlines and other reputable organizations indicate that the US aviation system may be approaching gridlock. The capacity of individual airports is increasingly a major factor in the creation of system-wide delays. As demand for airport capacity increases there is an increasing struggle to maintain adequate safety. The ASDE-X System is designed to address both of these issues by providing technology which will reduce controller and pilot workload through improved situational awareness. ASDE-X is an airport surface surveillance system for the airport surface designed to provide seamless coverage and aircraft identification (tags) to air traffic controllers (Hitchcock 2002).
Airport movement area safety system (AMASS) processes surveillance data from the terminal automation system and the airport surface detection radar to determine the position and velocity of aircraft and vehicles on the airport surface. The primary function of AMASS is to predict potential collisions between tracked aircraft as well as vehicular traffic. The system is not a separation tool, but rather a situational awareness tool to alert controllers to potential collision situations. When the system identifies a potential conflict it automatically alerts the controller visually and aurally. When operational, AMASS is to be operated continuously in order to augment the controller's visual observation of conflicts between arriving aircraft, arriving and departing aircraft, and vehicular movement on runways. AMASS complements airport surveillance by comparing the tracks of aircraft on final approach with the movement of vehicles/aircraft on the airport surface as detected by the ASDE-X radar to predict conflicts and alert controllers (Deaton 2001). An important fact to take away from this is that ASDE-X and AMASS must be implemented at the same time in order to realize the value of each...
