             In the novel, we witness a reconstruction of Offred as she slowly but surely begins to give up her identity. We initially learn that Offred is trying to retain her sense of self as she refuses to call the room she sleeps in "mine"(50), as it has no key for her privacy. Eventually; however, she begins to label it mine precisely as her private life begins to be compromised. She then joins herself to the Commander's household calling it "ours(81).
