             Compare the marriage relationships in The Miller's Tale and Nights in the Gardens of Spain
             The purpose of Chaucer being the actual narrator is to engage the miller, the fictional narrator to initiate the discussion of marriage. Chaucer knows that the Miller is going to start a string of stories based on marriage, but in fact the Miller doesn't. The last story in those about marriage is the 'Franklins Tale'. Chaucer makes the Franklin believe that marriage should be between equals when it comes down to it. However the women should always obey the man. It is based on courtly love.
             The purpose of Bennett's 'Nights in the Gardens of Spain' is basically to entertain. There is no assumed audience like there is in Chaucer which are the pilgrims actually travelling to Canterbury, but just an audience which happens to be the general television viewers. Therefore there isn't a string of marriage tales to tell like the Chaucer.
             The audience also differs. Chaucer's tales have three audiences. The assumed audience, which is the pilgrims making their way to Canterbury, the audience which is the courtly/noble people. This audience is a homogenous audience, which means that they are all rich, educated and very literate. The real audience are students studying the tales. However, Chaucer was highly unlikely to believe that his tales would be read and analysed in the future, therefore he would not be aiming at this particular audience.
             Bennet, on the other hand wrote the television scripts so that the general viewing population would watch them. The assumed audience seems to be a sympathetic listener. He may or may not have anticipated the fact that students would read them. As the narratives are meant for television the audience is ephemeral. This means that it is projected on television once, the audience is there and gone when the tale is finished.
