The Taming of the Wilderness
            
             There are those who say that the wilderness needs taming for economical reasons. To begin, what is wilderness, the trees in the little woods behind us, or the island out on the lake? Wilderness is the untamed land and animals of abundant natural beauty, whether it is in the Arizona desert or the rocky Appalachians. Over the course of history, humankind has tamed more and more of the wilderness in order to live on its land.
             The wilderness has been tamed and is being tamed so we can continue to use its resources and its land. The resources we take are needed in order for the continuing development and way of life in today's world. Trees are cut down in the wilderness for lumber to build houses and paper. The wilderness also hides another great resource, oil. Oil is needed for fuel, lubrication, and even heat in some homes. The benefits from these resources are needed and the only way to obtain them is from some type of wilderness area. There just needs to be a way to obtain the resources without destroying the surrounding land that has nothing to offer us except its looks.
             The opposition states that there will always be wilderness because state and federal parks cannot be tamed. The problem with this statement is that if all we have are state and federal parks will we really have any wilderness? If there are no other backwoods except for protected parks to go hiking in, or for animals to live in, then it will be filled with people trying to experience this rare phenomena. With so many people, filling such small areas of wilderness, there will be no wilderness. If protected parks are the only wilderness areas left then there will be no true wilderness. Instead, there will be protected areas that cannot be developed but they cannot truly be a wilderness with all of the human intruders.
