Gorrila, my love

             Toni Cade Bambara is an interesting writer. To me it is obvious that being from Harlem, shows her personal attachment to her work. My first brief read over of the piece of literature "Gorilla, My Love" was unsuccessful to me. I couldn't quit grasp what exactly was going on. I never caught on to the narratives character. After sitting down and thoroughly reading the short fictional type memoir I realized many things. Such as that the story was wrote from first person, present tense narration of specific events in the life of a particular Harlem like, African American child.
             The piece displays in my opinion, the young character living in a world that she questions and examines. We see much evidence of the views from a child's point of view, especially one growing up in what seems to be a black and white separated world. To be able to establish that the young female is of African American background is portrayed mainly through the dialect and diction used. Take for example "lemme" meaning, "lend me" or "ax" meaning "asked". It's as if it was wrote from how you would hear such a conversation. The spelling shows the expected pronunciation.
             Hazel's character comes across as assertive, challenging, and even combative. She stress' the image that she wishes for everyone to see her as. The opening paragraph begins with, "That was the year....". Hazel is recalling events around the same time area that she remembers. She tells of events like going to see a movie and being the brave, strong individual out of the group who fights to get there money returned when they realize the movie, "Gorilla, My Love", is not really about a gorilla. A memory like this is what a child remembers well. They remember in their own minds how they think they looked. Being the bigger, better, braver.
