When Fanny, a friend of main character Lenina, hears that Lenina herself has been seeing the same boy for 4 months straight she becomes extremely flustered: "But seriously...It's such a horribly bad form to go on and on like this with one man...And you know how strongly the D.H.C. objects to anything intense or long-drawn" (Huxley 41). In saying this, Huxley expresses the idea that long term relationships that could evoke true, deep feelings are highly unencouraged in this Brave New World.
             The idea of this emotionally detached utopia not only stemmed from Huxley's personal life but from the numbness of the time period as a whole. During the depression families were constantly torn apart by military obligations, having to aid distant family members, and most of all, the endless search for more promising job opportunities. Merlyn Kidder reveals, "Families were broken apart because of the constant migration from town to town in search of work" (Kidder online). Caused by this constant search, mothers were forced to take the roles of men in the work force and children's education was sacrificed so that they could help in earning a living. All of these uncontrollable factors lead to this time period's reluctance to become emotionally involved in any circumstances.
