Beggarland

(A British short story published in the 1990s.)
Jane who is an author employees an au pair girl to amuse the two children of hers, Ben and Angela, while Jane is writing a book. Jim is the father and he does not seem very engaged or interested in finding an au pair. The children are delighted about Greta their new au pair girl, but the parents are sceptic. Jane thinks Greta is rude and disrespectful and Tim does not think she is sexy enough. Ben and Angela opens up to Greta right away and the mother begins to accept Greta, because Greta makes her work much more effective by receiving all the attention from the children. Tim complains about Greta's looks and expression, but he is not really serious and does not really care. Ben asks Jane if they can use cardboard-boxes for playing beggars. At first the mother is negative, but short after she approves the idea and lets Ben and Angela act as beggars with Greta.

Greta excuses by telling that the money was meant to take her and the children to the Southend. Even though the mother is angry with Greta, the mother lets Greta stay as an au pair.
