Many people in the United States have not heard of blepharoplasty. I, for one, am new to this term. Although, if I was Korean, I would probably be at my doctors office right now getting a consultation or getting set up for my surgery. Blepharoplasty is also known as double eyelid surgery, which is very common among the Asian population. Only a week ago have I learned about this surgery and why it is performed, up until then, I didn't know anything about it. I was first drawn to this topic after flipping through channels on my television and coming across a program on MTV called, "My Life Translated". The story was about a girl who was pressured by her family and Asian society to undergo blepharoplasty. It was interesting to me because living here in America, I have heard of tummy tucks, face lifts and nose reconstructions but I have never heard blepharoplasty, which just happens to be the number two requested plastic surgery in the world. I spent the next few nights surfing the Internet to learn more about this process and why it happened to be so common but not talked about.
             In many ways the reason that Asians undergo this type of surgery is for the same reason that Americans get liposuction. Society pressures us to be skinny because that is "beautiful". Many Americans get liposuction to conform to societies vision of "beautiful". Hence, the reason that Asians get blepharoplasty is to conform to the social pressures of being what is viewed as "beautiful". It has been said that the eye is the window to the soul and you can learn a lot about a person by looking into their eyes. By having surgery to develop a crease in the eye, makes the eye bigger and wider.
