assessment of the cost and benefit of display and attack. These assessments are based on such things as an individual fighting ability and resource- holding potential, as well as their size relative to their opponent (Turner & Huntingford, 1986). In research done by Turner and Huntingford (1986) the outcome of contest between two mouth brooding cichlids, another species of fish known for their aggressive displays; could be accurately predicted if the relative size of the contestants was known. In the same study it was reported that a greater energetic cost/risk is incurred when a fight is between closely matched opponents, therefore it is extremely important for Siamese fighting fish to make an accurate assessment of their individual resources before entering an aggressive encounter with another individual to ensure survival.
The present study looks at a group of male Siamese fighting fish housed in individual plastic tanks, and of various experimental experience to different visual stimuli. The aim of this study was to observe the aggressive behavior and displays of the fish when presented with a mirror image of themselves, another male fish or color stimuli.
Various studies have shown that Siamese fighting fish will exhibit aggressive displays to their mirror image. The aggressive displays that were looked at were fin flare, gill flare, charging and gulping, latency to bite, and tailbeat. Therefore, the first experiment examined the aggressive displays of Siamese fighting fish to their either the magnified or regular mirror image. It is hypothesized that the aggressive displays( as mentioned above) will be greater when shown the
