Risk-taking in Literature

             Many times in literature, the characters take risks that seem irrational or silly. However risks need to be taken, in literature and even real life. They keep things moving and allow the person to strive for what they want even when all hope seem to have failed. Making these courageous moves involve gambling many things, but many times the outcomes are positive and worth it.
             In the motion picture of Emma, based on the novel by Jane Austen, a young woman named Emma takes a fancy to playing "matchmaker". She tries desperately to set her young female friend, Harriet, up with a spouse, but has no luck. In doing so, she herself discovers that she is madly in love with her close male friend, Mr. Knightley. Unfortunately, Harriet has fallen in love with him as well. Although Emma knows that if she accepts Mr. Knightley's wedding proposal it would break Harriet's heart, she must follow her own. She risks losing her close companion for a husband. Emma tries to break the news to her friend gently but Harriet is extremely upset. However, because Emma took a chance, she in a way freed her friend. Soon Harriet meets up with the man that had first proposed to her and they are happily married. Because Emma took that risk, the story ended most pleasantly for everyone.
             In another one of Jane Austen's works called Mansfield Park, a young woman named Fanny Price also takes a risk in the love category. Instead however, her risk is refusing a marriage proposal. The sly Henry Price asks for Fanny's hand. He is wealthy and could provide her with a decent life, a very large plus for Fanny who comes from a poor family and is being raised by her aunt and uncle. But Henry has a sort of suspicion to him that leads Fanny to believe that he may not treat her as kindly as he promises to. Although many shun her for her decision and call her stupid and ungrateful, Fanny follows her heart
