eginning tissue repair. If the macrophages don't invade the muscle, the activation of satellite cells does not occur and muscle repair does begin. When muscle increases in mass, it is mostly due to the activation, production, and combination of satellite cells to myofibres(5). Now the body concentrates on repairing the damaged muscle cells(6). In contrast to muscle hypertrophy, Muscle atrophy results when a muscle is not used for a length of time due to illness injury or is used for only weak contractions(2,6).
While most people know that exercise lends to muscle growth and development, muscle atrophy is a little less understood. Diseases such as diabetes and muscular dystrophy leave muscles weak and shriveled. Sometimes they render the patient crippled or even completely immobile. The muscle damage varies from disease to disease. There are varying degrees of damage to strength and muscle tone within each disease. Diabetes, only one of thousands of diseases, can drastically reduce the muscles of the foot, yet the nearby lower leg muscles are unaffected. There is no difference in the lower leg muscle amount between non-neuropathic diabetic patients and non-diabetic control subjects(1). Supporting this theory data from another diabetic muscle atrophy study showed a marked change in soft tissue in the feet of diabetic patients with neuropathy(2). Another disabling disease,
