Flaring tempers are introverted, but when men stop to eat, a bizarre moment of foreshadowing occurs when Kenny says "You ask me how I want to die today; I'll tell you burn at the stake (114)." Already it seems as though Kenny is semi-aware of the bitterness built up against him, and he gives the impression that his position at the top may not last much longer.
             While hunting, Frank and Kenny stray away from Tub and he is forced to dash after them though the frozen woods. Despite the fact that Tub's life was probably at risk due to the nonchalance of Kenny and Frank, he still gives almost no objection, saying only: "I was lost (115)".
