             The cross gender character gives the audience different signs in what to interpret on why the playwright has done this; they could see it for many reasons for which I would think that Churchill uses this technique to make the audience think about why Churchill has put the actors in this position. Thus using Brecht's alienation methods for the making the audience think while the play is being preformed about the context in which Churchill has put the characters like this. This works mainly for the character of Betty because as Churchill puts it in the notes at the start of the edition of 'Cloud Nine' by Caryl Churchill.              The way in which Betty's character changes in act two back into a woman again makes the audience think about what the performance is trying say. Churchill says in the notes at the start of the plays notes that
