committee led to it being copied in other districts such as Yorkshire, Northumberland and county Durham, with limited success. By May 1878 the Lancashire association was large enough to support its own monthly publication, in 'The Spiritual Reporter'. However an attempt for it to become a national co operation met with little success and thereafter policy was changed with national conferences being held in London and a network of district organisations being set up for the rest of the country. By the end of the nineteenth century there were fifteen unions and district councils.
             One of the most popular reform movements during the 1890's was the Temperance Movement which aimed to persuade individuals to renounce alcohol; most Spiritualists were in sympathy with the aims of the Temperance Movement because besides the moral arguments it is generally thought that the consumption of alcohol impairs the psychic faculties.
