Say you have just come home from a long day at work, you walk in the door and the first thing to great you is a happy, jumping puppy. Dogs bring happiness to many people on a daily basis, they are even called man's best friend. Would you think of testing harmful chemicals on your best friend? Would you purposefully drop something into your best friends eye to see if it makes them blind? Most people around the nation would answer no to those questions, but for many dogs and other animals that is exactly what is happening to them on a daily basis. Millions of animals are being killed each year because some people claim it is in the name of science and discovery. Animal testing is something that is cruel and inhumane, and should be stopped. These animals have no way of defending themselves against the chemicals that are poured on them in many cases just to see if they will die.
Animal testing or "vivsection" as it is usually called, is something that began as early as the 17th century. Even then there were strong opinions about wether or not it was humane to test on animals. Jeremy Bentham was the first to say " The question is not, can they reason? Nor, can they talk?, but, can they suffer?" Since the 17th century animal testing has been a very controversial subject. The majority believe that it is wrong to test products on the defenseless animals, but others believe that it is better to test on animals than on humans since the animals population is larger which apparently means animals are more dispensable than humans. The majority of the people who are for testing on animals are the people in charge of large companies, which are usually cosmetic but there are others.
