Mill applied the empirical approach to studying types of pleasure by observing individuals and society before drawing upon the conclusion that pleasure took two forms, intellectual and physical or high and low pleasures. Mill argued that a swine could experience low or physical pleasures such as enjoying food or sex; it did not have the capacity to understand or enjoy intellectual or high pleasures such as reciting poetry. This led Mill to conclude that intellectual pleasure took precedence over physical pleasures in terms of their importance. For Mill it would be better to be a miserable Socrates than a happy fool. As far as Bentham was concerned no distinction occurred between types of pleasures. A game of pushpin was equal to reciting poetry in terms of the level of pleasure it produced for the individual. All pleasures were on a par.
