Sociology

This assignment centers on the ideas presented in Chapters 2 and 3 of Introduction to Social Problems by Thomas J. Sullivan. This paper will deal with the way corporations affect the lives of society.
How do the actions of large corporations impact the lives of individuals? Corporations provide the goods and services people use everyday. Thus, corporate responsibility and good corporate citizenship is about the marketplace. In the community, corporations need to assume a leadership position with investments and issues pertinent to small business and customers. In the workplace, are corporations treating employees well and encouraging their participation? In the environment, are they taking care of our surroundings, the air we breathe, and the energy we use? Whatever decisions a corporation makes, it has a profound impact on the lives of everyone.
Jobs have been lost due to the decisions of corporations. Robots have automated manufacturing, which in turn has cost the jobs of those people that used to do the same craft. Jobs have been lost due to multinational and globalization of companies. The profit motive and power has made companies produce products in other countries. Cheap labor and less stringent rules/regulations has been the attraction to expand overseas.
The lives of individuals have been greatly affected by corporations. Job loss has led to an increase in divorce and crime. People are relocating and switching jobs more often due to the loss of good paying jobs. Government can be controlled with large donations from corporations, thus impacting the laws by which we live.
Large corporations can affect a person's sense of who they are. Corporations have the ability to control a person's income, knowledge, growth in the organization, and a person's behavior. Without a proper wage, people cannot afford to buy a decent house, clothing, transportation, or health care.
