Persuasion

I think that the contrast between a typical modern day love story and the typical Victorian love story is very interesting. For instance, if Persuasion were to take place today, there is no doubt in my mind that there would have been a lot more "drama" about the new arrival of Captain Wentworth into Anne's life. They would have had to have at least one passionate interlude by now, while in the story they have barely even spoken to each other. I think that this and many other differences can make it difficult for the modern day reader to understand and relate to the story. I must admit, that I cannot stop wondering when Anne is just going to break down and admit her undying love for Captain Wentworth, or at least when Captain Wentworth is going to break down and say something at all to Anne. To a modern day reader, Persuasion could very easily seem like a dry and boring Victorian novel.
However, Persuasion does have its own "drama" albeit in a slightly different way than is considered typical now. Jane Austen creates conflict within the characters themselves, rather than between the characters. She does this especially well with Anne, who is constantly going back and forth in her own mind about her predicament with Captain Wentworth. While have not dramatic scenes where the two main characters finally meet and express their feelings for each other, the fact that they are constantly together and hardly even acknowledge each other creates a tension all its own. It's difficult to imagine being in such close quarters with the love of your life and only being able to carry on polite conversation. In this way, you could argue that Persuasion is much more dramatic and tension filled than a modern day romance.
