I picked this poem because I was stunned by the beauty of the comparison between an angel and a winged sunlight. It seemed to me an extraordinarily powerful imagery, one of which usually reveals the true nature of things. The purity is the common denominator of both: the angel and the winged sunlight.
Apocalypse, from the verb apokalypto, to reveal, is the name given to the last book in the Bible. This book describes the end of the world. The poet uses this name as the title of his poem because he talks metaphorically about the same possible event.
The poem is built around the fundamental contrast between light and darkness, white and black, life and death. The disappearance of one generates the other. I think the angel is a well chosen metaphor for hope, faith, good will or even love. As soon as either one of these is missing, life, or existence as the author calls it, doesn't make much sense.
The act of drowning is done on purpose, the poet tells us that the angel "drowned himself", like in a suicidal act. The place were the angel has chosen to drown was the sea, which, I guess, symbolizes human mediocrity. The message here is that there are situations in which human beings chose to give up whatever makes the life worthy to live. As a result, as the author shows us at the end of the poem, "night descended over existence" which means, I think, either that the existence reached an end or that nothing outstanding happens anymore.
I think the author is a dreamer who is aware of the dangers of not being able to dream anymore. Also, he is a very good observer, an analyst, one who goes to the root or the meaning of everything he describes.
The poet presented the poem in a very simple, cause – effect form (i.e. the angel drowned hence night descended over existence). That simplicity though is rich in meanings and interpretations.
