Macbeth

             A theme is described as a unifying idea that is a recurrent element in a literacy or artistic work. The play Macbeth starts out with the witches' famous lines, "Fair is foul, and foul is fair, hover through the fog and filthy air." These lines convey the theme that things aren't always as they appear. In Act IV, the witches show Macbeth three different, yet important apparitions, these apparitions are as followed; an armed head, a bloody child and a child crowned with a tree in his head. The first apparition, an armed head, says "Macbeth! Macbeth! Macbeth! Beware the Thane of Fife." The second apparition, however, later contradicts this apparition. This is probably the only apparition that doesn't follow the theme that things aren't always what they seem. In order words, the first apparition is simply a warning to watch out for Macduff. Furthermore, the second apparition was a bloody child. The apparition told Macbeth that " The pow'r of man, for none of woman born shall harm Macbeth", in short term, no man born from a woman would ever hurt Macbeth. This apparition made Macbeth feel as if he was immortal or "untouchable", since all humans are woman-borne. If the apparition was true then how was Macduff able to kill? The answer was simple, Macduff wasn't technically born from a woman; his mother had a c-section, so in reality Macduff wasn't born from a woman. This goes along with the theme that things are always as they appear because everyone comes from a woman, on the other hand, Macduff's mother didn't actually give birth to him, the doctors ripped him out of his mother's stomach. Finally, the third which is a child crowned with a tree in his hands tell Macbeth that he cant be defeated into Birnam Woods comes to Dunsinane.
