Civil Liberties and Security

            While the American government is often admired for its democratic policies and freedoms established there, there are still problems that exist. In terms of civil liberties, the United States of America represents a great system, but it's when these freedoms are compromised to ensure the nation's safety, that the very principles of freedom that America was founded upon become threatened. Now, in post September 11th mayhem, Americans around the country find themselves striving for their freedoms and privacy at the priceless expense of their own safety.
             Security systems in airports were placed at high alert after the high-jackings, policing became daily routine of racial profiling, and Americans' own privacy was violated after countless searches were performed in search of contraband and weaponry. America went through plenty of reevaluating in order to secure the nation back to the powerful nation they once were. But there are however ways to keep our country safe and still keep its citizens happy. Government officials are the only people who can ensure American people ill live safe happy lives and adhere "to the pursuit of happiness." The American government should assume full responsibility for establishing policies that will allow Americans to simultaneously live in safety and happiness.
             In Richard A. Posner's article on security and civil liberties entitles "Security Versus Civil Liberties", he discusses that the priorities involved in retaining the civil liberties in this country are out of order. His argument is that the issue is one that should be handled by the United States government. Being that the institution of American government is democratic, responsibility can be distributed between both citizens and the government to ensure a balanced resolution.
