urrent theme that I have found about Appalachia. In each selection, alcohol has been a large part of the characters that are involved with the plot of the story.
             Looking back through the novels we have surveyed, I have found an example of alcohol in many of them. First is Divine Right's Trip, a novel written by Gurney Norman in which D.R. (which is the main character), a hippie, travels across the nation in an attempt to get back to Appalachia. The first appearance of alcohol comes when the Lone Outdoorsman planned "to stop off at his camper for a beer and a bar of pemmican" after seeing D.R. talking with the foreign ladies (25). The Lone Outdoorsman is a major character in the beginning and carries on through a great part of this novel. The main character, D.R., stays stoned on drugs throughout the novel, which is another vice used by people to escape worries or problems. In the anthology Appalachia Inside Out: A Sequel to Voices from the Hills, Stephen L.
