St. John Ervine once said, "Every man... should periodically be compelled to listen to opinions which are infuriating to him. To hear nothing but what is pleasing to one is to make a pillow of the mind." Ervine is pointing out the fact that many people create intolerance because they are not open to other interpretations. In "Nipple Jesus" one-sided thought creates chaos. The controversy over Martha's Nipple Jesus is that it is made up of thousands of nipples cut from porn magazines. Once word gets around about the artwork, opinions are made, one either loves it or hates it, and now the line is drawn. The opinion of the viewers can be broken down into three categories: the "good", the "bad", and the "Martha". Nick Hornby's "Nipple Jesus" proves that one's own opinion can blind him by his intolerance of other opinions.
             Dave, the security guard, represents the "bad" in this tale of intolerance. He represents those who love what Nipple Jesus conveys, even though he himself is not really sure what that is. His first impression of the work starts to build a wall in hopes of keeping opposing opinions out. He says, "I couldn't understand it, why there was all the fuss. I just thought: religious people. Nutters. 'Cos they are, most of them, aren't they?" (99). Dave, right from the start assumed that all those who opposed Nipple Jesus were religious nutters. Not only does he oppose those who are offended by the picture but also anyone who seems religious. Dave admits to not being very religious himself, which is why he assumes those who oppose the picture must be religious. It is typical for a person to assume the beholder of an opposing opinion to be one's complete
