             The responsibility of delivering the commissions was placed upon Secretary Marshall, but he failed to fufill this task. Because of his mistake, many of the appointed judges did not receive their commissions before midnight; the end of Adams' term as President. The following morning Marshall's error was realized and several of the commissions were hurriedly delievered.
             The following day Jefferson took office but did not seem at all disturbed by Adams's last minute commissions. But Jefferson was simply biding his time. Jefferson later stated, "I can say with truth that one act of Mr. Adams' life and one only, every gave me a moment's displeasure. I did consider his last minute appointments to office as personally unkind. Jefferson ordered that the deliverance of the commissions must stop, and that not another judge selected by Adams would be appointed to the court.
