in disbelief. Blanches self-arrayed image of upper-class mentality and an 'untouched' body are misleading. The truth being Blanche's addiction to alcohol and lust has left her a fragile and neurotic women with nothing left in the world except for the fantasies she produces. Blanches final downfall that ultimately leads to her breakdown is when Stanley rapes her. The emotional and sexually violation has left Blanche is ruins and has detached her from any sort of grip on reality she once had. Ultimately, the book ends with Blanche being lead off to a mental institution. Tennessee Williams's A Streetcar Named Desire is a brilliant example of fantasy's inability to overcome reality. Williams does an excellent job of character development so that the reader is able to connect and understand the conflict going on between and within each character. Ultimately I believe that A Streetcar Named Desire is a timeless story and by publishing it, it will not only be a great success but it will be enjoyed by readers everywhere, now and in years to come.
             Blanche Dubois, the main character of the book, is a fragile and neurotic woman. The last of her 'kind,' Blanche is a southern belle who speaks greatly of her refined values and morals. Blanches is visiting her sister who lives in New Orleans, a diverse and noisy neighborhood filled with working class people. It is apparent that Blanche does not only stick out, but also doesn't belong. Williams carefully constructed the frigid and upper class character of Blanche to juxtapose the area of easy going area of New Orleans. It is later revealed that Blanche is a fallen woman. When Blanche is first introduced she is 'jumpy' and constantly relying on alcohol and long baths to "calm her nerves," however, it is never revealed why. After loosing her husband and the family estate of Belle Reve, Blanche has turned to promiscuity to fill the emptines...
