Before watching the video, I didn't know much about deaf people and the lives they live. I have always thought that if a person is deaf, then they couldn't hear anything. After watching the movie I found out that this is not true. Some deaf people can hear high pitched sounds, muffled noises, and more. I thought that this was very interesting. I had no idea that there was a "cure" for deaf people. Although it is not near a 100% cure, a cochlear implant can aid a person who is deaf, well enough to allow speech recognition and hear a multitude of different sounds.
             When I was watching the movie, I had many thoughts and asked myself many questions; do deaf people get discriminated against, do hearing people have a better quality of life, could it possibly be that being deaf could be more peaceful? It was amazing to me how many deaf people were against the idea of having a cochlear implant. I never knew how proud deaf people are of their "deaf culture". It seemed to me like the "deaf culture" was segregating themselves from the rest of the "hearing" world. Although being proud of one's culture can seem, perhaps, ignorant? It just seemed to me like they didn't want help. In today's world, we are striving in medical technology, and if you had a cure for a "handicap", wouldn't you take it? I sure would. I couldn't imagine losing any of my senses at any point in my life. The movie opened up a lot of questions and thoughts that I never had before, and learning about American Sign Language is teaching me that there are many different types of languages, spoken and not.
