             Dr. Glasser is founder and president of The William Glasser Institute in Chatsworth, California. The William Glasser Institute is an international training organization devoted to teaching his ideas in countries across the world.              Glasser's initial background and training were in Freudian psychoanalysis. He eventually rejected these ideas in favor of an approach oriented more toward responsibility, an approach that made different assumptions about human needs and motives. Whereas psychotherapists assume that basic needs are psychosexual in nature, Glasser believes that human needs are defined more in terms of successful social relationships. Psychotherapists might attempt to uncover the source of poor psychological adjustment among various repressed, subconscious experiences; Glasser instead tries to help people live successfully in the conscious world. He does not accept the psychoanalytical axiom that the source of present behavioral and psychological difficulties consists of unconscious mental conflicts. To him, traumatic events experienced earlier in life do not unconsciously direct behavior. Rather, he believes that social and psychological problems are an outgrowth of bad decisions made about social relationships. His approach is to help people identify behaviors that are inconsistent with accepted social norms, accept them as irresponsible, and replace them with more socially desirable ones. He believes that good psychological health depends on loving and being loved and feeling worthwhile to ourselves and others.
