First they killed my father

This book has impacted me in a few ways. It has showed me what life is like in other countries and how and what they must do to survive. It has also shown me that family is more important than material items. I thought this book strongly emphasized on what war is and how many people would die and be killed in a war. I also thought the book described the family's every day life very well. The book was very descriptive in what happened and how they would survive day by day. Loung has deeply expressed how hard the transition from being an upper class family to being just like lower class families with having hardly anything at all. She explained what it is like to have no food and what it smells, and looks around her. This book has also shown how a communist state is run, but how it would never work. For example, Kim was stealing corn so his family would have enough to eat every night. This is what makes them not equal with everyone else which makes communism not work. Everyone would get the same amount of food to eat and everyone would wear the same thing. Everyone was considered equal. Overall, I thought that this book was good and has shown me how lucky we are to live in America. After I read the book, my views really haven't changed. Although, I have learned that the Khmer Rouge has killed 2 million Cambodians, which was ΒΌ of the Cambodian population.
